FOURTH SUNDAY after THE EPIPHANY
GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH
Ashland, Oregon
Rev Joshua Heimbuck
30 January 2022
WELCOME
We extend the hand of fellowship to all who worship with us this morning. It is our prayer that through this hour of prayer and thanksgiving, the Holy Spirit will strengthen your relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are worshiping with us for the first time, please honor us by signing our Guest Book in the entrance hall of the church. If you have no church home of your own in the area, we invite you to make Grace Lutheran the center of your worship, learning, fellowship, and service. Come to worship with us again and often!
AS WE GATHER
The glory of God is often revealed when and where it is least expected. God uses our lips to declare that glory, inexperienced and hesitant though they may be. God uses our love to demonstrate that glory and so urges us to exercise it. God uses Jesus of Nazareth, water and the word, bread and wine, to reveal God’s glory where and when God chooses. Take heed, lest the glory of God slips through our midst unnoticed.
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP
Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

(The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.)
Pastor In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation Amen.
Pastor I will go to the altar of God,
Congregation to God my exceeding joy.
Pastor Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Congregation who made heaven and earth.
(Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.)
Pastor Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
Congregation Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Pastor Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation Amen.
THE PASSING OF PEACE
Forgiven and reconciled by God, let us be reconciled with one another and share the share the peace of the Lord.
[The congregation is encouraged to share the peace of Christ and greet one another.]
APOSTOLIC GREETING
Pastor The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit with you all.
Congregation And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Congregation Almighty God, You know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright. Grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
[Whenever we worship, God speaks and we listen. We hear the Word of God
Read aloud in our midst, bringing us both God’s judgment and grace.]
OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 1:4–10
4.Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5.“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
6.Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” 7.But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8.Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the Lord.”
9.Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,
“Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
10.See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”
Assistant This is the Word of the Lord.
Congregation Thanks be to God.
[Some at Corinth prided themselves on their spiritual gifts. Paul reminds them that God gives us many gifts through the Holy Spirit, but the most important of these is love, the kind of love that allows us to live and work in cooperation with one another, the kind of love that God showed us in Jesus Christ.]
EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:31b—13:13
I will show you a still more excellent way.
1.If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2.And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3.If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4.Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5.or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6.it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7.Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8.Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9.For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10.but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11.When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12.For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
13.So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Assistant This is the Word of the Lord.
Congregation Thanks be to God.
SPECIAL MUSIC Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness by Dan Forrest Tatsiana Asheichyk
HOLY GOSPEL Luke 4:31–44
Pastor The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fourth chapter.
Congregation Glory to You, O Lord.
[The people are astounded by Jesus’ teaching and marvel how he teaches as one who has real authority. Not only does he teach with authority, but even the evil spirits respond with terror and are asking if their end has come! He silences them with his words and brings healing and wholeness to the one who is possessed.]
31.[Jesus] went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32.and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33.And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34.“Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35.But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36.And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37.And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
38.And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39.And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40.Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41.And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42.And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43.but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44.And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

SERMON “Is God calling you?” Jeremiah 1:4–10
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from his Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
he suffered and was buried.
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures
And ascended into heaven
and sits at the right of the Father.
And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and
the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Lord and giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and
glorified, who spoke by the prophets.
We believe in one Holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +
PREFACE LSB 216
Pastor The Lord be with you.
Congregation And also with you.
Pastor Lift up your hearts.
Congregation We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
Congregation It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Pastor It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Congregation Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Congregation Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
Pastor In the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at His command, and with His own words, we receive His testament:
